The 2 GW Al-Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Producer project in Abu Dhabi will be the largest solar project ever financed when it is completed. This is a significant undertaking for Abu Dhabi and the renewable energy sector due to its size and complexity. With a tariff that is one of the most competitive in the world, it is anticipated that the project will power approximately 160,000 households throughout the United Arab Emirates. At the 2020 PFI Awards, the project won Solar Deal of the Year.
When it is completed in 2022, the Taweelah Reverse Osmosis (RO) facility at the Al Taweelah Power and Water Desalination Complex in Abu Dhabi will be the world's largest RO water desalination plant. With a capacity of 909,200 cubic meters per day, the plant will be 44% larger than the current largest RO plant in the world. Over 350,000 households will have access to sufficient water thanks to the desalination facility. With the use of RO technology as opposed to thermal desalination, the Taweelah plant will set new standards for both the effectiveness and the cost of the water it produces.
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant can be found 53 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Ruwais in the Al Dhafra of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi on the Arabian Gulf. When fully operational, the four nuclear reactors of the APR1400 design at the Plant will meet up to 25% of the UAE's electricity requirements. The UAE's efforts to diversify its energy sources include the Barakah plant, which will reduce the nation's carbon footprint while simultaneously supplying homes, businesses, and government facilities with clean and efficient energy. The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is anticipated to prevent up to 22 million tons of carbon emissions annually when fully operational, which is equivalent to removing 4.8 million automobiles from the road.
One of the largest wind farms in the Middle East, the 400MW Dumat Al-Jandal wind farm is Saudi Arabia's first utility-scale wind power project. The first power was generated when the Dumat Al-Jandal wind farm's initial phase was connected to the grid in August 2021. Full-scale commercial operations are anticipated to begin in the first half of 2022. The wind farm is projected to offset up to one million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually and produce enough electricity to power approximately 70,000 Saudi homes when operating at full capacity.
